I always wondered that immediately when someone dies and people start saying that the person has “left.” Even though the body still waits to be buried or cremated, does that mean the body is not the person? This question made me reflect on the nature of our existence. Both scientists and mystics agree that we are not just our bodies; rather, our true essence is something beyond physical form. The body can be seen as an attire we wear to experience life—like a costume in a play. Spiritual teachings speak of the soul’s eternal nature, while quantum physics hints at consciousness existing beyond matter.
Spiritualism and Mysticism:
Many spiritual traditions, such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Christianity, propose that the soul or consciousness is separate from the physical body. For example, in Hindu philosophy, the Atman (true self) is eternal and distinct from the physical form. Mystics often describe the soul as an immortal essence that transcends physical death, supporting the idea that our true identity isn’t confined to the body.
Quantum Science:
While not explicitly endorsing duality, some interpretations of quantum physics suggest that consciousness may be fundamental and not entirely reducible to physical matter. Theories like those proposed by physicist Roger Penrose and anesthesiologist Stuart Hameroff explore the idea that consciousness arises from quantum processes in the brain, hinting at a non-material aspect of awareness. Although controversial, these ideas open discussions about a reality where mind and matter are interconnected yet distinct.
Together, these perspectives provide a multifaceted view supporting the notion that mind and body are separate but intertwined entities.
This perspective leads me to believe that my body is actually the oldest thing I’m wearing right now—it’s been with me since birth, serving as a temporary vessel for my consciousness. So, what’s the oldest thing you’re wearing today? For me, it’s this physical form that connects me to my human experience.

Disclaimer: Happiness or suffering has a lot to do with our consciousness and cognitive abilities. This article is an attempt to deep dive into the human consciousness by the author. From academic research papers, spiritual scriptures, science journals and interviews of different researchers of neuroscience and quantum physics, the author has tried to present his idea of human consciousness. It does not intend to hurt or discourage any belief, community, community, organization or individual. The study of consciousness has not yet been wholly included in mainstream science because science solely relies on evidences derived from sensory inputs, however consciousness is something beyond human sensory perception.
